SUMMER SCHOOL FOR SWRI MEMBERS
Sabhal Mor Ostaig College, Isle of Skye, 09 – 13 July 2012
Whether it will be your first SWRI Summer School or you have been before, we hope that you will apply to come to Skye 2012. It’s time to think about which class you would like to attend. For an application form, please send a SAE to SWRI, 42 Heriot Row, Edinburgh EH3 6ES – application forms will be sent out on 09 January 2012. The classes are as follows:
Enjoy some time in the classroom learning all about Scotland’s flora and fauna and more specifically, Skye’s. Then you will get out and about to enjoy the island's fabulous scenery visiting some very special places where the amazing variety of Skye wildlife is found: woodland, moor, meadow and seashore. Watch out for otters!
This class will be taught by a local tutor, with two days in the classroom and a third structured as a field trip. Skye has been occupied since the Mesolithic period and has a colourful history including a time of Norse rule and a long period of domination by Clans MacLeod and Donald.
Taught by a tutor from local group Skye Dance, this lively class will teach various aspects and styles of dance. The emphasis is on fun and something for everyone to enjoy. There will be an opportunity to show off your skills to your fellow members on the Thursday evening.
A local artist will teach various techniques in working with plants such as grasses, moss, heather and willow and show how to create items out of these materials. The class will cater for all abilities and will include an opportunity to get out and about and gain inspiration from the landscape around you.
A unique opportunity to explore the intricacies of pillow lace; you can borrow all the equipment if you wish to do so. You will become familiar with the tools, learn the basic stitches, work a small motif and go away with the confidence and knowledge to pursue what is a compelling hobby.
This class includes covering a cake with sugar-paste. The cake will then be decorated with sugar flowers – e.g. roses and freesia. If time allows you will also be modelling small sugar figures and using patchwork cutters. This class is suitable for beginners and those who have just started sugar-craft.
Indulge your millionaire tendencies by discovering this craft. Gold work can use actual gold and silver coated threads and guided by the tutor you will discover how to create beautiful embroidered pieces; class also suitable for those already with some experience.
The accommodation for the Summer School is in the college in en-suite rooms. The fee for a resident sharing a twin room is £250.00, which includes all accommodation, all meals and all tuition. The fee for a resident in a single room is £270.00, which includes all accommodation, all meals and all tuition. The non-residents’ fee, which includes meals and all tuition, is £140.00. These prices do not include the cost of materials supplied by the tutor, entry fees to any local attractions, travelling to & from the college, etc. There will be a deposit of £50.00 to be returned with the application form.
Two classes, Dance and Sugarcraft, still have limited spaces left; however these would need to be taken up on a non-residential basis (details of local B&B’s are available). Please send an application form to Ann Yourston at Headquarters if you would like to apply. All the other classes are fully booked and all have reserve (waiting) lists.
