How to Join the SWRI

Who can join SWRI?

SWRI is a non-political, non-sectarian organisation open to women of all ages and cultures who either live in the country or are interested in a country way of life.

How can I join SWRI?

Becoming a member of SWRI is simple. Once you have discovered where your nearest institute meets, you can just go along if details of time and place are given. You can also email headquarters at swri@swri.demon.co.uk or phone 0131 225 1724 and you will be given the institute secretarys phone number. It is then up to you to make contact and become involved. It is also possible to go along as a visitor first before deciding to join.

How much will it cost me to become a member?

Each institute sets its own annual subscription which will probably be no more that 25 per year.

What can SWRI offer me?

SWRI Events

Institutes normally meet monthly in a local hall from September to April or May. You will hear a range of interesting speakers, participate in a variety of demonstrations and enjoy whist drives, quizzes or theatre nights. A diverse range of activities organised by the institute for the institute.

A Federation is a group of institutes within a defined area run by the Federation Executive Committee which organises various events that all the members within the Federation can attend for example, craft, cookery, baking and floral art classes and demonstrations, inter institute competitions in a variety of sports e.g. golf, curling and bowling, quiz nights, rambles, trips and tours, drama and singing competitions and much more.

SWRI Events

National level is governed by Central Council representing all areas of Scotland. A wide variety of opportunities is available to members from throughout Scotland, an annual summer school, study tours, conferences, competitions, national sporting finals, drama, singing and speaking finals, weekend schools, proficiency tests can be taken in a variety of subjects including a wide range of crafts, cooking, baking, nutrition, gardening, floral art, painting, photography and calligraphy.

Starting your own Institute

Starting your own institute can be easy too! If there isnt an institute meeting in your local area why not get together with a few friends and start your own. Contact swri@swri.demon.co.uk and you can be taken through this easy process!
