Mull & Tiree has six Institutes, 5 on Mull and 1 on Tiree. Although it takes some time physically to get between the two islands, we keep in constant touch thanks to technology, i.e. email and the occasional video link.
Institutes meet once a month, from September to May and visitors to these meetings are more than welcome.
Dervaig meets in the Church Hall on the first Wednesday of each month
Fionnphort meets on the first Wednesday of each month, apart from January, which is the second Wednesday in January. Depending on the content of the meeting they are held in various venues. For more information contact Federation Secretary
Salen Salen meets in Salen Church Hall on the first Wednesday of each month.
Tiree meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the Resource Centre, Crossapol
Tobermory meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Glen Iosal
Torosay meets on the first Monday of each month at Craignure Hall.
Annual membership averages £15.00, but for this we are entertained and enlightened by the many varied talks and demonstrations held by each Institute, some from speakers who live locally and some from other areas. Demonstrations of crafts are always welcomed and you don’t have to be an expert in any of them as you can always learn new ones! To give you a flavour of the sort of things we have enjoyed in the past, these have included Encaustic wax art, Soap-making and travelogues showing wonderful faraway places.
To get an in-depth knowledge of certain crafts we hold 2 days schools occasionally. In the past members have learned furniture restoration, felting and willow-work.
Items of local interest include Archaeology, History, RNLI, Genealogy and of course the famous Sea Eagles.
We have many chances throughout the year for members from all the Institutes to get together at Federation events and meet friends old and new. Apart from the AGM and Interim meetings, we have our Inter-Institute Quiz in March, the Social in June where we hear all about what has been going on at Headquarters and throughout Scotland; our Federation Craft Show in June (hosted by each Institute in turn) and Ruralympics/bowling in the Autumn.
Each Institute is also involved with local groups, such as Senior Citizens, Brownies, Church and Woodland Groups.
If you would like any more information, either on a particular Institute or at Federation level please contact the Federation Secretary (email: gretel1950@gmail.com )
