Welcome to the web site of the Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes.

With 814 institutes it is one of the principal educational organisations for women in Scotland. Being a member allows women of all ages the opportunity to learn new skills, participate in a wide range of activities and enjoy the friendship of others. Events are organised at local, federation and national level and there is something for everyone to enjoy.

SWRI began in 1917 and currently, many of our institutes are celebrating their 90th anniversaries and I am enjoying being part of their special celebrations.

SWRI offers a wide range of activities for members. There are conferences, Scottish country dancing weekends, walking weekends, handcraft weekends, summer schools, study tours, demonstrations and talks, drama, speaking and singing competitions, together with curling, bowling and golf competitions. Something for everyone! During these events, members have the opportunity to renew friendships and meet people from different areas of Scotland. Time is always available to discover what is happening within other institutes and federations.

SWRI prides itself on its National Proficiency Test Programme. Members can take tests in a variety of skills from baking or sewing to gardening or floral art to name just a few. Good test results have even given some members the confidence to branch out into business for themselves.

I look forward to meeting you at an institute some time in the future.

Scottish Home and Country, containing reports and news from Institutes throughout Scotland and much more, is the official magazine of the organisation and is available for all members to purchase.

You are never too young or too old to join! No experience is necessary in sewing, knitting or cooking! If you are not already a member, then why not give SWRI a try? You will be made most welcome at all institutes

I look forward to meeting you at an institute some time in the future.

Isobel Robertson, National Chairman SWRI
