Inverness-shire and the Islands Federation has 28 active Institutes, or 'Rurals', each with its own programme of activities. You can find them right across the Federation from Aviemore to Stornoway in the Western Isles.

Traditionally craft work has always been important to the Rural ladies and it is still. Crafts vary from all varieties of needlecraft to woodwork. Work is done using everything from looms to computers. SWRI ladies are also famed for their cooking skills and this remains today an important interest for many members.

There are however many other activities enjoyed by Rural members. Drama, including producing plays, and public speaking, both formally and informally, are very popular with some of our members. Music, including singing in choirs and dancing, is popular. Photography and artwork are also important, filling a large section in our Federation art and craft exhibition. Each Group of Rurals also has its own rally and exhibition each year.

Most Rurals become an integral part of their community and also run such events as Christmas parties or outings for young or elderly folk. They may well become involved with local groups eg for lobbying over conservation issues. Possibly our most important activity however is socialising. Meetings provide an opportunity to get together for fun and often food! Gathering, usually once a month, members find friendship and support as well as fun and laughter in this unique organisation.

Do call - we would love to meet you. Inverness-shire and the Islands Institutes
