Members go to monthly Institute meetings for talks and demonstrations on anything from
- Art to aerobics
- Cooking to computing
- Travel to traditions
- Weaving to wildlife
Lots of Institutes have choirs or drama groups, others run sporting activities like golf, badminton, curling and bowls.
Most meetings include Institute business and the opportunity to meet other members. All of them offer friendship and fun and the chance to get to know your neighbours. All are involved in local community life and constantly strive to preserve the quality of rural living.

Institutes send representatives to the Federation.
Scotland is divided into 34 Federations broadly along county boundaries.
In each Federation the Institutes come together to enjoy:
- Federation shows
- Drama and choir festivals
- Sports competitions
- Handcraft classes
- Cookery demonstrations
- Travel
and from time to time Federations will organise 'special interest' outings, events and projects.

Federations send representatives to Central Council, SWRI's governing body.
